People tend to think of cleaning as a chore, but the reality for me, and many others, is that cleaning feels great. It’s more than just removing dirt and eliminating stains. Cleaning is an activity that creates a sense of order and calm. It makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something. It makes me feel good. In fact, people who know me well sometimes give me cleaning products as gifts. That’s how much I enjoy it.
When you can get past the idea of cleaning being something you have to do, you can appreciate that cleaning is something you get to do. Seriously. If you want a pick me up in under 5 minutes, try one of these:
The room that bothers me the most when it’s messy is the kitchen. Once the food is put away and the dishes are done I like to wipe down all the surfaces and make sure they shine. I use Scotch-Brite® Dusting Cloths on the appliances and counters, and Scotch-Brite® Glass Cleaning Cloths for hardware, faucets and windows. When the surfaces are clean and the hardware sparkles, I feel instantly relaxed. I never go to bed without a clean, sparkling kitchen downstairs.
Every day before I leave the house I make sure the bed is made and there are no clothes on the floor. And I make sure my children do the same in their rooms. It seems like a small thing, but making the bed has a calming effect on me and it’s also a great way to set intentions for the rest of the day. If you make your bed and clean up your room, you’ve already accomplished something positive. It’s the best way to start the day.
We always hear about the importance of doing good deeds – how about doing some clean deeds? It’s a kind gesture and it makes people feel great. Whether it’s cleaning up a common outdoor space, like wiping down a dirty park bench, or helping someone with a dirty job, like cleaning a BBQ, surprising someone by cleaning up makes both of you feel great. Try using the Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge to help clean areas around your kitchen, garage and outdoors.
It’s been proven that having pets around can help improve people’s moods, so I’ve made my company’s office dog-friendly. I have to confess that I wasn’t sure about it in the beginning. I love animals but I don’t love the idea of pet hair in the office. The solution? We keep it stocked with Scotch-Brite™ Lint Rollers. Any time it starts to stress me out I just give the furniture and my clothing a roll. I promise you, removing hair and lint off furniture and clothing is an incredibly satisfying activity.
When I’m watching television or working on my computer and the sun hits it at a certain angle, all I can see is dust, and it stresses me out. So now I always keep a Scotch-Brite® Microfibre Kitchen Cloth nearby. It only takes a few seconds to wipe it down and it instantly makes me happier.
