A Fresh Fridge in Minutes

A Fresh Fridge in Minutes

  • Contributed by Kristy Still of Mommy Hates Cooking

Each week as I prepare for our weekly grocery shopping trips, the first thing on my to do list is to clean out the fridge. It never fails that food seems to pile up over the week with containers full of leftovers or sticky fingers that have dug through the fridge.

What can I say? My toddler thinks it’s fun to get in the fridge on a daily basis and see what fun she can find in there. Our new favorite thing…fridge locks.

One way that I really get our fridge to shine is by scrubbing the inside with the Extreme Scrub Sponge from Scotch-Brite Brand. I use the soft side with a little soap and water to clean each of the shelves. I try to do this at least every other week if not every week. I store most of our food products in the fridge and sometimes little spots of salsa, milk, and substances make their way onto the shelves

I have found that even just a little bit of condensation on the shelves makes them appear dirty.

It never fails though; the dirtiest spot in our fridge is usually the produce drawers. I typically just toss our produce in the drawers as soon as I purchase it at the store, then I wash it before using. In the midst of it being in our drawers some of the outer lining of onions or other produce items drifts to the bottom of the drawer making them full of dirt or simply parts of produce.

  • I pull these drawers out then run them under water and use the sponge to clean them down well. Sometimes this calls for the more coarse side of the sponge too (just be sure to test it in a small area first as it may scratch some surfaces).

Lastly, I do all the shelves in the door of the fridge. These tend to build up the most with all the condiments being stored there, especially the jelly. I always seem to find jelly that has spilled out onto the shelf.

  • This same process can be done for the freezer as well although we typically do that about once a month.

I challenge you though to go through your fridge and freezer, you will likely find that you can make a week worth of meals just off what you have that maybe you haven’t used yet or forgot was there!

This whole process typically only takes me about 10 minutes, then I head off to the store to load up on more groceries for the week. I actually love grocery shopping just for the sheer fact that I get back to a sparkling fridge stocked with food for the week. I feel pretty blessed knowing that our fridge will be full.
