Homeowner checklist to keep your house running smoothly

Your home is your castle, so you want to keep it running smoothly. Keeping on top of certain tasks, whether it’s monthly, quarterly or annually, could save you a small fortune in repairs in the long run. Here are a few items to keep a close eye on.

1. Every month

  • Check all of your vents for potential obstructions, including vents on your appliances like your refrigerator and stove.
  • Clean out your garbage, recycling and green bins by pouring dishwashing liquid into the bottom of the empty bin and then using a hose to wash them out. If there are caked on bits of grime along the sides, put on a pair of plastic gloves and use a Scotch-Brite™ No-Scratch Scrub Sponge to remove. By cleaning your bins frequently, you’ll save yourself the task of tackling one big mess every year.

2. Every quarter

  • Change the Filtrete™ Clean Living Dust Reduction Filter in your furnace to help keep the air in your home fresh, reduce dust particles, and your furnace running smoothly
  • Check all cabinets, closets and doors for squeaky hinges and add oil where needed.

3. Every year

  • Spring: Clean your gutters to remove any winter sediment or leaf build-up.
  • Summer: Check your garage and shed for paint damage, and your decks and fences to see if they need to be stained.
  • Fall: If you’ve got a fireplace, make sure to have your chimney cleaned so you’re ready to build a cozy fire safely when the cold weather hits.
  • Winter: Throughout the cold months, keep a close eye on ice buildup on your eaves. Cover your air conditioner to avoid damage from falling icicles.

Pro tip: Add these tasks to your calendar, so you never forget about what you need to do or when you need to do it.
