Ideas for using common grocery staples to eliminate stains, odors, mold and mildew.


Lemon juice contains acid, which kills most forms of mold and mildew.

How to use it
Apply equal parts lemon juice and water to moldy and mildewed areas. Let sit for 10 minutes before washing with warm, soapy water.


A fine, dry powder that is highly effective at absorbing grease.

How to use it
Rub cornstarch into grease stains on clothing and let sit before laundering with hot water and detergent.

White vinegar

An acidic liquid that breaks down grease, mold, bacteria and germs.

How to use it
Spray a vinegar and water mixture onto the inside of the fridge and wipe clean with a sponge.

Baking soda

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) neutralizes odors by reacting with other chemicals.

How to use it
Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of your garbage before lining with a plastic bag.


Salt helps soak up fresh liquid spills before they saturate and stain carpet.

How to use it
Cover the stain with salt and leave it until dry, then vacuum up the salt.
